Impressive Lineup for ATP Nightmare Before Christmas

November 8th, 2008 by Richard

All Tomorrow’s Parties have announced an impressive lineup for 2008’s Nightmare Before Christmas annual 3-dayer at Minehead. Curated by the Melvins and Mike Patton, the lineup now boasts Squarepusher, Fantomas, Dalek, Leila, Rahzel, Fennesz, Kool Keith and lots more.

Very happy to see Leila on the lineup, following her ‘08 album on Warp Records which I have struggled to remove from my playlist ever since - a really diverse album bringing together elements of avant garde electronica, deep bass (maybe dubstep influenced?) in tunes like Mettle, and just some plain great vocal work from guests like familiar guest vocalist Martina Topley Bird on “Deflect”. Leila’s set supporting Bjork’s Volta tour was not quite as impressive as could have been imagined, but nevertheless. Well worth seeing.

Mainstream media jumps on Net Label bandwagon

November 6th, 2008 by Richard
RCRD LBL

RCRD LBL

One of the most talked about music sites of the last 12 months has undoubtedly been RCRD LBL, Downtown Records‘ online incarnation. It would be easy to take a skeptical view of this kind of venture, but instead we are embracing the arrival of a high quality mainstream net label, and enjoying the prospect of this medium becoming more accessible and widespread.

RCRD LBL has some impressive sponsorship from brands including Puma, Virgin America and Nikon and has tunes available from acts on Warp, Dim Mak and Modular, to name a few.

Certainly these guys have taken a progressive approach to free downloads, reconsidering their distribution model rather than prosecuting fans, unlike many of the other sinking ships out there. Plus you can download some pretty good tunes from some bands you’ll recognise.

Enjoy.

TV Youth headline slot takes place of Klaxons DJs, Brighton

November 6th, 2008 by Richard

Last month’s Klaxons DJs booking which sadly fell through at the last minute here in Brighton was covered by none other than our very own TV Youth. A fun time was had by all thanks to an ecclectic mix of indie-electro-electronica-dubstep smashers, and an array of his own new material. Wow.

NL39 / Sisters

TV Youth

Sisters

Style: Electro, Techno, Electronica

TV Youth presents a 25 minute collection of trademark big-basskick dancefloor-filling electro tunes and slightly more downtempo, thoughtful numbers. "Forward Actions" starts the game introducing all of your expected 00's electro character sounds, followed closely by "Stations", with a funkier and more tightly constructed vibe. Rolling straight across to "Sisters" riff-kick pounding which by its half way point has progressed to a quite complex piece combining rolling drums, guitar riff....

NL38 / Charlbury Gardens

Odan

Charlbury Gardens

Style: Acid, Electro, Electronica

Odan has one of the most engaging and danceable live shows we have seen in the last few years, so it brings us great pleasure to present some of his work for release on Net-Lab. Charlbury Gardens is a collection of super danceable electro/acid tracks, jumping straight into it with "Oof2" and its shuffling beats and gorgeously sqweltchy bassline. "Kingswood Funk" is an obvious favorite too, with a really strong melody, and then later some quite sad feeling synth tones...

NL37 / Acid Blue

V/A

Acid Blue

Style: Acid, Electro, Techno, Electronica

Part One of our "Acid..." compilation series, featuring 15+ tracks from some established names as well as some total newcomers in a collection of Acid influenced material featuring many a sqwelchy bassline. Includes tracks from Chevron, Voltek, Mully and Shinra amongst many others. Dedicated to anyone who remembers when basslines were a little more diverse than a wobble, the compilation explores both melodic electro-style acidic numbers, through to the more pounding techno and experimental variety.

NL36 / Dalston 2066

Mully

A Week At Night

Style: Ambient, Electronica

A collection of delicate pieces constrasting Mully's previously heard style of work, each track an amalgamation of flowing melody, micro-beats, and ambience. Many of the tracks have a warm, contemplative feel, though also with a melancholy vibe throughout. "Icelandia" and "Beach" are definite first listen favorites, with tracks like "She Will Lose" that take a few more listens to really appreciate.

NL35 / Planes, Trains and Highways

X&Trick

Planes, Trains and Highways

Style: Drum n Bass, Industrial, Hardcore, Breakcore

X&Trick on top form presenting his unique blend of Drum 'n' Bass, Industrial, Hardcore and Breakcore with plenty of fantastically obscure noises, thick bass and dischordant synths. Introduced by a collaborative track with Chevron, "Brighton", each track on the release is recorded in a different location around the world and named accordingly. Dark, hard hitting and at times definitely summarising the euro/belgium scene, the release is also quite diverse, with the more melodic starting track through to "Dubai", which is reminiscent of an Evol Intent / Current Value style dark drum and bass, and then completed by the pounding techno of "Gent"
